PEMRA auctions 70 licences for satellite TV channels

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Friday auctioned 70 licenses for satellite TV channels.

PEMRA said it had offered 70 satellite TV licenses in seven categories — eight in News & Current Affairs, 27 in Entertainment, five in Sports, two in Agriculture, 12 in Regional Languages, four in Health and 12 in Education genres.

Bidding for News & Current Affairs, Entertainment and Regional Languages was concluded on Thursday, whereas on second day licenses in Health, Sports, Education and Agriculture were offered through bidding.

News & Current Affairs category channel brought the highest bid of Rs283.5 million, whereas Entertainment category went for Rs50.5 million. The highest bid for regional languages channels offered Rs102 million, Agriculture for Rs52 million, Sports for Rs42.5 million, Education for Rs46 million and Health for Rs42 million bid.

The successful bidders would be required to deposit the balance amount of the earnest money of their offered bid within 15 days.

On May 2, PEMRA had organised a two-day auction event at its headquarters for open bidding of new licences of satellite television channels.

The auction continued till Friday which was being participated by 187 companies where licenses of 70 STV channels of seven categories including news current affairs, entertainment, health, sports and other were sold out.
