PM, ex-CJP to perform Mohmand dam’s groundbreaking on May 2

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan and former chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar are scheduled to perform the ground-breaking of much-awaited Mohmand Dam on May 2 at Swat River, about five kilometres upstream of Munda Headworks, Mohmand district.

According to a notification of the Ministry of Water and Power, all arrangements have been finalised in this regard.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has awarded the contract of the project to a consortium led by Descon Engineering. The project will be completed at the cost of about Rs183.523 billion.

Mohmand Dam would have a gross storage capacity to store 1.2 million acre-feet (MAF) water with power generation potential of 800-MW and it will irrigate around 16,000 acres of land and ensure supply of water to 160,000 acres of land. Residents of Peshawar will get 300 million gallons of potable water.

The dam will generate a profit of Rs52 billion annually. The project aims at helping mitigate the risk of floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Mardan.
