ISLAMABAD: Sohail Mahmood took over his duty as the new Foreign Secretary of Pakistan on Wednesday.
After assuming his office, the foreign secretary met with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, according to Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal.
The minister congratulated the secretary for assuming charge of his office.
Qureshi said Sohail Mehmood is a seasoned and experienced diplomat with a long experience of serving at important positions including as the high commissioner to India.
Sohail Mehmood in his remarks said that he will make the utmost efforts to perform his duties to the best of his capabilities.
Mahmood replaced top diplomat Tehmina Janjua who retired on April 16. He was among the top contenders for the post since the start of the year.
FM Qureshi had made the announcement about Mahmood’s appointment during a media talk in Multan last month.
He said the decision was taken following discussions with Prime Minister Imran Khan. He expressed gratitude to the outgoing foreign secretary Tehmina Janjua saying he had learnt a lot from her experience.
