WB to loan $100m for water supply, sanitation services

The World Bank (WB) is expected to consent a loan of $100 million for the improvement of access to safe water and sanitation services in Karachi.

According to details, the loan will help the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) in financial and operational sectors.

The sources said a WB team will start evaluating the project submitted by the Sindh government later this month while the approval will be accorded by the bank’s executive board by end of June.

The proposed projects are aimed at increasing equitable and sustainable access to safe water and sanitation facilities in the metropolis, in addition to addressing the challenges of infrastructure gaps, operational under-performance of the KWSB.

Earlier, the World Bank had proposed $400 million aid to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board for developing water and sewerage services in Karachi on November 9.

However, the Sindh government had approved in standard and determined to go move forward with the arrangement.

This arrangement initiated from a meeting, when World Bank team directed by senior water resources management specialist Andreas Rohde called on Saeed Ghani, Local Government Minister in his office.
