NEW DELHI: The Dalai Lama was released Friday from the hospital in New Delhi where he was admitted Tuesday for a lung infection, told AFP spokesman.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader left the private Max hospital, located in the south of the Indian capital, at 8:00 am (0230 GMT), and “is doing very well now,” according to his services.

“He recovered from the lung infection he suffered and will take a few days off in New Delhi before returning to Dharamsala”, a health resort in northern India where he has been living in exile since his flight from Tibet. 60 years ago, told AFP spokesman Tenzin Taklh.

The Dalai Lama was admitted Tuesday to the hospital, suffering from chest pain. One of his collaborators spoke of “light cough”.

On Thursday, the services of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate had indicated that he had resumed a normal pace of life and did a little exercise.

Although the Buddhist monk remains an extremely popular speaker, he has reduced his international commitments and has not met any foreign leader since 2016. Governments around the world are no longer hurrying to invite him, fearing to provoke anger from Beijing.

Fearing that the appointment of his successor is phagocytosed by China, Tenzin Gyatso has repeatedly reported that his lineage, perpetuated since the fourteenth century, could die at his death.

This global icon gave up its political power in 2011 and entrusted the task of guiding Tibetans in exile to a diaspora-elected prime minister, a historic break.

Throughout his life, spent for the most part in India, the Dalai Lama has relentlessly sought a compromise with Beijing on the fate of Tibetans. A non-violent and pacifist struggle hailed by the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
