KARACHI: The Supreme Court (SC) Karachi registry on Thursday extended the bail of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Hyder Jamali for two weeks in an Rs1.4 billion corruption reference.

The apex court’s bench heard the bail plea of ex-IGP and others and extended the bail for two weeks. The court directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to submit its investigation report against former IGP Jamali. The court, later, adjourned the hearing of the case for two weeks. The NAB had filed a reference last year against Jamali along with six other policemen for misusing funds of the police department.

The accountability court in Karachi had charge-sheeted Jamali and six other accused in the corruption reference in 2017. NAB claimed the recruitments were made for the posts of constables and computer operators, among others, which caused a loss of over Rs500 million to the national exchequer.

The indictment came in the corruption reference filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in line with the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan that took action after allegations surfaced that nepotism and corruption were committed during Jamali’s tenure as IGP Sindh in recruiting hundreds of policemen.

Moreover, during the SC proceedings, Jamali was accused of embezzling hundreds of millions of rupees, prompting the apex court ordering his removal from his post.
