Sugarcane farmers plead govt to continue sugar exports

LAHORE: The Pakistan Kissan Movement (PKM) on Tuesday urged the government to formulate farmers’ friendly policies and continue sugar exports for the welfare of sugarcane farmers.

The farmers criticised Provincial Minister for Industries, Commerce and Investment Mian Aslam Iqbal who had chaired the meeting in which it was decided to approach the federal government to stop sugar exports. The said meeting was attended by Provincial Ministers Bahadur Drashuk, Sami Ullah Chaudhary and Noman Akhtar Langrial.

They said that sugar prices had stabilised because of exports and stopping these exports would result in a decline in sugar prices which would directly impact farmers.

They added that Pakistan badly needs foreign exchange and export of surplus sugar would benefit the country by increasing foreign exchange while farmers would also receive a stable price for their hard work but this would not be possible if exports are stopped.
