A cottage industry of rumours about the prime minister’s marriage has sprung up again. This time round, a television pundit has even gone to the extent of saying that the union was teetering on the edge of being over. Social media mills added fuel to the fire, saying that Tareen had to step in to mediate between the couple.
All unfounded rumours, though. The man in Bani Gala is, yes, under a lot of stress. Specially since the release of Nawaz Sharif, which he was not expecting. Some venture to say he was toying with the idea of quitting. But when it comes to Khan, somehow even these far more serious matters of consequence don’t get as much traction with the rumour mills as does news of his marriage.

The cabinet member in question is a key local operative of the ruling family of a Gulf state with whom the Sharifs enjoy good relations. Expect the talkshow warriors of the League to sit this one out and stay mum.
