Umerkot’s Rs660m filter plant supplying unclean water

UMERKOT: Umerkot’s Rs660 million filter plant is supplying health hazard water to citizens as low-quality chemical instead of Phitkri is being used to cleanse the water to plunder public money.

Health hazard chemical is used to filter the water through this plant to the citizens. The chemical samples have been sent to the laboratory for the test under the supervision of a judicial magistrate, sources told PPI.

Public Health Engineer Umerkot Ghulam Haider Shaikh threw blame on the company for supplying low-quality chemical instead of Phitkiri to the plant for cleaning the water. However, there were reports that he had committed corruption by purchasing low-quality chemical instead of Phitkiri.

The citizens said that their lives had been put at stake by corrupt officials of the plant. They said that water-borne disease could emerge in the city. It may be noted that Typhoid, Naegleria fowleri and Cholera can cause death if not cured timely. The provision of safe drinking water is a primary source for a healthy body. Around 45 per cent cases of infant and child mortality in Pakistan are due to the result of water-borne diseases and the majority of these die in Umerkot and Thar region.

Deputy Commissioner Umerkot Nadeemur Rehman Memon said that low chemical was being used for drinking water and added that chemical samples had been sent for laboratory test while a letter had also been written to the anti-corruption establishment for action. He said that 1.5 lac population was getting water supply through this plant and no one would be allowed to play with human lives.
