Hari Tehreek, AT hold demo against water scarcity

KARACHI: The leaders and activists of the Sindh Hari Tehreek and the Awami Tehreek, accompanied by growers, held a protest demonstration outside Karachi Press Club on Wednesday against water shortage in Badin district that has affected standing crops.

Speaking on the occasion, the leaders, Mazhar Raejo, Munawar Jatoi and others said that the croplands were turning barren due to acute water scarcity in Badin district, but the provincial government was not paying any heed towards this issue.

They demanded immediate supply of water to canals and tributaries of Badin so as to end water scarcity for crops. They said that acute water shortage had hit the tail end growers. It is reported that 19,000 cusecs of water are required, but the growers are receiving only 1,500 cusecs which is very low. The sediments in the canals could not be removed properly that is affecting flows to tail end growers.

The leaders flayed the irrigation department for creating artificial water crisis in Badin district. They demanded of the PPP rulers to take notice of the water shortage and overcome it so as to save growers from economic losses.
