ISLAMABAD: Justice Gulzar Ahmad on Thursday remarked that the education sector is being ruined, universities are mushrooming in every nook and corner of the country and degrees are being sold.

He gave these remarks while presiding over a three-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) during the hearing of the case related to mushrooming universities and degrees.

“Why the government does not look into these matters. Our generations are being ruined. One generation has been ruined and second is in line. This matter will not be resolved by bringing it into courts,” he further remarked.

“Preston university’s main campus is operating in Kohat and I also saw its board in Karachi. On the other hand, Al-Khair University has started doing what Axact is famous for,” he observed.

The court sought a reply from the attorney general and Higher Education Commission (HEC) within 15 days.

On the other hand, counsel for Punjab government took the plea in the case pertaining to encroachments on Girls School Gujranwala, saying “we are ready to provide alternative land to the education department.”

Justice Gulzar Ahmad remarked that the school was located on trust land and in the heart of the city and how the kachchi abadi came into being on trust property while regularising trust land runs contrary to the law.

He inquired what action was taken against the officers involved in the illegal work. “The chief secretary should sort out the problem till tomorrow and if he does not address this small problem then why is he holding his office?” the justice asked sarcastically.

He further remarked that the chief secretary should resolve the issue otherwise he would face the consequences. “What is the justification in providing the land for a school at the distance of 13 kilometres from people’s houses? How will the children go to such long distance and come back every day? Why has the kachchi abadi not been shifted?” he went on to ask while adjourning the hearing.
