ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday disqualified former member National Assembly Mian Tariq Mehmood who was previously affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Mehmood was disqualified for concealing details of his foreign assets in the nomination papers he had submitted to the election commission. He was elected from the National Assembly seat in Gujranwala in the 2013 general elections.
The ECP had reserved its verdict in the case and announced it today. A three-member ECP bench headed by chief election commissioner Sardar Raza Khan announced the verdict.
In its decision, the election commission ruled that the former MNA stood disqualified from 2013. The ex-lawmaker has also been directed to return perks he received between 2013 and 2018.
The plea against the ex-MNA was filed by Punjab Assembly lawmaker Mian Muhammad Akhtar Hayat.
On Feb 25 last year, Mehmood had announced to part ways with the PML-N.
Lawmaker Mian Tariq Mehmood, elected from NA-98 (Gujranwala-IV), ditched the ruling party along with a large number of representatives of the local government elected on PML-N tickets.
He, however, hadn’t disclosed any reason behind his defection, nor did he announce his plans at that time whether he will join any other party in future.
