The first-ever successful transplant of liver was conducted at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) on Saturday.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid expressed contentment over the first successful operation of the newly-established institution. She said that the liver donor and the patient – both are in good state.

Dr Faisal Dar was the surgeon who conducted the operation, she said.

Dr Yasmin dubbed the development as promising news for the Pakistani public, adding that the patients seeking liver transplant will not have to spend millions in foreign hospitals as the PKLI will serve them now.

The liver transplant of children will also start in June this year at PKLI, she had informed the Supreme Court in January.

It may be recalled that the PKLI had has been in the limelight for irregularities and misappropriation of funds. The Supreme Court had also taken a suo moto notice in this regard.
