Book on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto launched at Karachi Gymkhana


KARACHI: Zulfikar Ali Bhutto: The Psychodynamic of his Rise and Fall – written by Shamim Ahmed, was launched at the Karachi Gymkhana.

The launch ceremony attracted many well-known personalities of the city as well as renowned literati. These included Javed Jabbar, Dr Jaffer Ahmed, Sirajuddin Aziz, Ghazi Salahuddin, Dr Nafis Qureshi and Iqbal Saleh Muhammad.

The book is an appraisal of the reasons behind the rise and fall of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the speakers at the launch ceremony took the opportunity to delve into the reasons of the rise and fall of Bhutto in light of the psychodynamics of the times as well as the personality traits of Bhutto.

On the occasion, Javed Jabbar said that there was a need for such a book. He said that the writer had been objective in gathering facts and analyzing them and the book did not reflect a biased view.

Banker Sirajuddin Aziz said that Bhutto’s intellect served Pakistan well as he managed to present the country’s case on the international forum effectively. He said that Bhutto was an expert at winning over the audience, of which the Islamic Summit of 1974 was a good example.

Dr Jaffer Ahmed said that after Jinnah, Bhutto had been the centre of discussion among political analysts and historians and many books were written on him. He said that Bhutto’s interviews published in international newspapers also highlighted many aspects of his personality. He said that though many books on Bhutto had been written earlier, Shamim Ahmed has provided a psychological analysis of the rise and fall of ZA Bhutto.

Speaking on the occasion, author Shamim Ahmed, a retired civil servant and a former Chairman, FBR, said he had tried to search for an answer to explain how a man of Bhutto’s calibre and stature could not avert his fall despite his tremendous rise. He said Bhutto had admirable attributes and he succeeded in raising the morale of the Pakistan army by signing the Simla Agreement and arranging the repatriation of Pakistani POWs from India.
