Defending champs of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Islamabad United dealt a setback as veteran batsman Ian Bell has been ruled out of the tournament due to a leg injury.

Bell has initially sustained the injury before the start of the 2019 PSL during a warm-up clash against Multan Sultans. Despite the injury, the Englishman turned out for Islamabad on Friday in their clash against Peshawar Zalmi and registered a crucial 46-ball 54 in his side’s 12-run win.

The half-century, though, came at a cost to both Bell and Islamabad with the veteran batsman aggravating his injury. Bell will now play no further part for Islamabad in the 2019 edition although the 36-year-old will stay with the team for the upcoming clashes against Multan and Karachi Kings before making a return to England.

“Absolutely gutted that my time with Islamabad United and PSL T20 will be cut short with an injury. It’s been so much fun with some great people. Staying to support the boys for next two games then back home to get everything sorted for an exciting summer coming up,” Bell wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Despite his discomfort, Bell was seen actively participating in the team’s training session on Monday with the Englishman doing some throw downs for the young batsmen.

Islamabad are expected to announce a replacement for the injured Bell in due course. Mohammad Sami and his men currently sit in third spot in the PSL table after playing five matches with three wins and two losses.
