PML-N leadership says will pursue legal course for Nawaz’s freedom

LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leadership on Monday said the party was holding legal consultations and would soon decide on a future course of action after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s sentence in the Al-Azizia case.

“We have always respected the courts and will continue to do so. We will not panic,” said PML-N President and Nawaz’s younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif.

Shehbaz further said the PML-N would utilise all resources and explore all options for legal recourse to ensure justice for Nawaz Sharif.

Earlier in the day, party leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi expressed disappointment saying the PML-N was expecting the court to grant bail to the former prime minister.

Speaking to media after the hearing, Abbasi said they were expecting bail to be granted to Nawaz on medical grounds.

“We have always respected court decisions and we will adopt more legal ways to fight this,” Abbasi added further.

IHC on Monday rejected Nawaz Sharif’s plea seeking suspension of sentence in Al Azizia verdict. A high court bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani ruled that the former prime minister will have to serve the sentence in prison.

The former premier is currently undergoing treatment at the Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, where his room has been declared a sub-jail by the Punjab Home Department.
