An anti-terrorism court on Friday acquitted fifteen accused in the murder of Ambreen Riasat, who was burnt to death for allegedly helping an eloping couple in May 2016 over a “lack of evidence”.
A 15-member jirga called by the Makool village councilor Pervez had ordered for the deceased, Amber, to be set on fire. The body of the teenage girl was found in a burnt Suzuki van in Donga Gali.
She had been tied to the seat of the vehicle parked at a bus stop in the village. Another vehicle parked near the van was also damaged. The girl was later identified as the daughter of Riasat, a laborer who works in Balochistan’s Gadani area.
Police reports claimed that the jirga had ordered the murder to punish the girl for supporting an alleged affair of her friend with a boy.
