ISLAMABAD: In Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK), a complete shutdown will be observed on Monday to mark the martyrdom anniversary of prominent Kashmiri leader Muhammad Maqbool Butt, who was hanged by Indian authorities in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984.

Call for the strike has been given by Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.

They have also called for protest demonstrations at Lal Chowk in Srinagar to press for the return of mortal remains of these martyrs to their motherland for a proper burial.

On the occasion, a memorandum will be sent to the United Nations (UN) secretary general, seeking the intervention of the world body to settle the Kashmir dispute.

Special prayers were held in all main mosques of IOK for martyrs Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Hurriyat Forum Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday said that the best way to pay tributes to the Kashmiri martyrs is to remain united and steadfast in the pursuit of the cause of freedom from India.

In a statement, he paid tribute to prominent Kashmiri liberation leaders, Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru, on their martyrdom anniversaries.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq appealed to the international community to take notice of Kashmiri people’s sacrifices and the repression unleashed by India in IOK.

He also urged the world bodies especially human rights organizations to ask New Delhi to return the mortal remains of Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru, buried in Tihar Jail, to their families for burial in Kashmir.
