Karachi anti-encroachment drive enters second phase

KARACHI: The anti-encroachment drive in Karachi on Saturday began its second phase with directive to ensure that illegal buildings, stories and portions are demolished.

The drive is being carried out by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) , Karachi Development Authority (KDA) and other authorities in the provincial capital upon orders by the Supreme Court.

Last year, the apex court had directed to initiate an anti-encroachment drive in the provincial capital.

Water, electricity and gas departments will assist in the implementing the second phase of the drive, according to a notification.

A list of buildings that will be demolished is under preparation in addition to properties whose ownership changed after 2003.

Relevant departments of the provincial government have also been directed to collect information regarding schemes launched by the KDA. In addition, action is also expected to be taken against the illegal occupation of sports grounds in the metropolis.

Authorities will submit plans regarding the implementation of the drive to the Supreme Court while the provincial government will be presented with images taken three months apart to highlight the changes.
