LAHORE: A bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) while hearing a petition seeking formation of a water commission to secure underground water in the country on Friday sought details of the government’s water policy and a relevant report of the World Bank (WB).

Justice Jawad Hassan of the LHC heard the petition that said the government had failed to take steps for saving water in Pakistan.

“The service stations at petrol pumps are not being regularised and the administration has failed to devise a policy to secure water,” the petition said.

The petitioner pleaded to the court to order the constitution of a water commission to save the precious resource.

After hearing the arguments of both sides, the bench summoned the implementation report on the water policy and relevant report of the WB.

In a previous hearing of the case, the bench had issued orders for the submission of the record of the Supreme Court (SC) decisions on the water-related issues.

The bench had called the matter as key to the survival of the country and its coming generations after being informed that according to the WB report, Pakistan lost water of around an estimated value of $12 billion every year.

The report included recommendations to secure water and improve related administrative matters in the country, the petitioner had told the court.

He had also sought from the court orders for security of water and steps to supply clean water to the citizens.
