Intermittent rain and hailstorm in parts of Punjab, including Lahore, added to winter chills Thursday.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), widespread rain-thunderstorms with snowfall over the hills is expected in northeast Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore divisions), besides Islamabad, Kashmir and at scattered places in Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sahiwal and Bahawalpur divisions.

Rainfall (mm) during the last 24 hours: Lahore A/P, Mianwali, Narowal 02, Gujrat 16, Murree 13, Chakwal 12, Sialkot ( A/P 12, City 04), Jauharabad 06, Noorpurthat 03 and Rawalpindi (Chaklala 19, Shamsabad 17).

The minimum and maximum temperatures in Lahore were recorded at 07°C and 16°C, respectively, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, experts have said that the current spell of rains would have a positive impact on wheat as the crop is at vegetative growth and showers at this stage would help enhance tillering. This would boost the output of the crop, they said.

Rain spells will also be beneficial for oilseeds and pulses that have been cultivated over thousands of hectares to meet the domestic demand.

A significant increase in gram production is also expected during the current season owing to the reduction in frost and favourable weather conditions, experts said.
