KARACHI: Political and social parties continued protests across Sindh on Wednesday against the honour killing of a 14-year-old girl, Rimsha Wassan, who attempted to exercise her free will regarding marriage in Pir Guddu village near Kotdigi.

The protesting leaders and activists, accompanied by citizens, pressed the authorities to arrest all the accused involved in the innocent girl’s murder and punish them so as to bring an end to such injustices in society.

In Naushehro Feroz, Pakistan Peoples Party-Shaheed Bhutto (PPP-SB) leaders, led by Wazir Wagan, held a protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club, demanded the arrest of all of Rimsha’s murderers.

Meanwhile, Khairpur police have arrested main accused Zulfiqar Wassan, who is also said to have been involved in three honour killings before, and started a probe into the incident. Another suspect Ghaffar Wassan has also been arrested.

Khairpur police Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) termed the arrest of the main accused, who is a relative of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Manzoor Wassan and the nephew of PPP MNA Nawaz Wassan, a historic achievement of Khairpur police.

“The said criminal had been committing various heinous crimes for last 25 years. He had been involved and nominated in 20 different heinous crimes including murder, kidnapping for ransom, ATA, robberies, dacoities and was wanted by police in numerous cases,” said Tufail.

Today, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) leader Nusrat Sahar Abbasi has demanded the formation of a joint investigation team (JIT) in the case while a local court has also remanded accused Ghaffar Wassan to police custody for seven days.

A 14-year-old girl, Rimsha was killed last week at her house in village Pir Guddu near Kotdigi, a stronghold of former home minister Manzoor Wassan where the crime rate has been exceedingly high for years.

The media is reporting that Rimsha was killed for expressing her wish to marry according to her choice.

Earlier on Monday, the Sindh Assembly witnessed a pandemonium after its chair refused to take up a resolution pertaining to the honour killing of Rimsha.

Opposition lawmaker from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Dua Bhutto had asked deputy speaker Rehana Leghari to take up the matter for debate.
