Police arrest primary suspect in Ramsha murder case

KHAIRPUR: The primary suspect in the murder of teenage girl Ramsha Wassan, Zulfiqar Wassan, was arrested by authorities on Wednesday.

Zulfiqar, who is a close relative of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Manzoor Wassan, was wanted by police in a number of cases other than the murder of Ramsha.

These included theft and kidnapping for ransom, police said.

The 13-year-old was killed earlier this month in the name of Karo Kari or “honour killing” in the Kunb area of Khairpur.

According to Ramsha’s mother, she was killed as she wanted to marry someone of her choice. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah condemned the incident and directed SSP Khairpur to ensure justice is served. Locals also took to the streets in cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and Khairpur to protest against Ramsha’s murder.

Three of the four suspects mentioned by Ramsha’s family in FIR have already been apprehended.

Imtiaz Wassan, PPP leader Nawab Wassan’s cook, was arrested by police on Tuesday as well in relation to the case. Similarly, on Monday, police also arrested Zulfiqar Wassan’s accomplice Ghafar Wassan.

Manzoor Wassan, meanwhile, has denied reports that he was intervening in the case.

“Ramsha’s relatives registered a case against Zulfiqar Wassan and others. Arrests have been made and we have neither intervened nor exerted any pressure. The entire Wassan clan is the same for us,” he said while talking to a local media outlet.

“Many people do not know the background of the case. The same person did not kidnap and kill Ramsha,” he added.

“Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has raised the issue and is always in contact with party leaders,” he elaborated.
