PESHAWAR: In what seems to be another incident of persecution of the local transgender community, one transperson was killed and two injured as unknown assailants opened fire on a vehicle in Jatta Ismail Khel on Tuesday night.

According to reports, the transgender persons had been attending a musical event in Karak district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and were returning to Peshawar when they were attacked.

The deceased belonged to Mansehra while the injured hail from Peshawar and Swabi. Local law enforcement agencies have started raids to capture the suspects.

Earlier in December, at least 11 men allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped a transgender person while also filming the ordeal, a private media outlet reported.

According to reports, the accused then shared the video via social media to pressurize the victim.

In October 2018, the Supreme Court (SC) had issued directives to the federal and all the provincial governments to formulate a policy for the welfare of transgender community for ensuring their constitutional right to living a dignified life, with an objective to end social exclusion of the community and to bring them into the mainstream society.
