JERUSALEM: Israeli Police said on Wednesday that security personnel shot a Palestinian woman in a West Bank checkpoint after she attempted to stab them. The incident took place at the A’zaim checkpoint east of Jerusalem.
Israeli Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said in a statement that “a female suspect attempted to stab security guards who were on patrol in the area,” adding that no Israelis were injured in the incident. The condition of the suspect was not immediately clear.
“The police are investigating where the female suspect came from and the security is continuing in the area,” Rosenfeld said.
The incident was part of an ongoing surge of violence in the West Bank, which Israel said was stoked by the Palestinian National Authority, but the Palestinians said that it is the result of 52 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
