KARACHI: While bearing the financial burden of more than 1,000 employees who had been appointed by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in the past, the Sindh government has decided to abolish the cash-strapped Sindh Small Industries Corporation (SSIC) to lower the burden on the provincial kitty, Pakistan Today has learnt.
Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah has also reportedly given the go-ahead to work on the plan to close down the SSIC aimed at lowering the financial burden on the provincial government which bears more than Rs400 million annual to pay salaries to the staff of the corporation.
According to sources, the corporation’s actual strength was 100 however more than 1,000 inducted on political grounds by the MQM. The corporation has been feeding at least 52 clerks, 25 peons and as many as 18 watchmen in its head office located at Regal Chowk, Saddar.
The actual sanctioned strength of the corporation is around 100 however the coalition partner of the government has made continued appointments in it that has reached at 1,000.
Resultantly, the corporation’s saving, deposited in different bank accounts have finished and the provincial government gives bailout package for the salaries to the staff.
The politically-appointed workers have never attended their respective offices and still drawing salaries. The SSIC is facing a shortage of funds and its employees paid salaries late. Its financial crisis is set to worsen in the coming days due to the extra burden of politically-appointed employees.
The sources disclosed that there are at least 52 clerks who were working in the corporation’s head office.
