LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Friday approved constituting 40 of its standing committees, out of which 21 will be headed by lawmakers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led coalition government.

The Opposition members, on the other hand, will head the remaining 19 committees of the provincial assembly.

According to data available on the provincial house’s website, at present, the assembly has a total of 44 committees, including 36 standing committees for government departments, Public Accounts Committee (PAC-I) and PAC-II, Committees for Privileges, Library, Government Assurance, Finance, Business Advisory Committee and House Committee.

Senior Punjab Minister Abdul Aleem Khan said the issue of standing committees in the provincial assembly would soon be resolved. “The opposition has a very important role in any democratic system,” he added.

“We must accept each other’s importance and give space to work towards solving the public issue.”
