ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani on Thursday said that the rights of professional journalists ought to be protected by ensuring implementation of existing laws, adding that new legislation should be enacted to this effect if required.

He expressed these views while talking to a delegation of Peshawar Press Club at Parliament House. Senator Khanzada Khan was also present on the occasion.

He said that media was an important segment of society and journalists’ proactive role provides necessary guidelines for carrying out the agenda of social and national development. “Unfortunately, the problems of professional journalists, who highlight the issues of all segments of society, remain neglected,” he added.

Sanjrani said that journalists from Peshawar and other areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) had offered sacrifices during the war on terror and had played a proactive role for establishing peace in the troubled regions. “Their sacrifices cannot be overlooked”, he added.

He said that the Upper House of the Parliament would play its due role for promotion of media and protection of the journalists in the country.

He said the problems highlighted by the delegation would be deliberated with the relevant stakeholders for their early solution.

He said that necessary measures should be taken for implementation on the existing laws for job protection of the media person in the country.

Earlier, representatives of the Peshawar Press Club apprised the chairman about the problems being faced by the journalist community.

They informed the chairman that professional journalists are being deprived of their job without notices and requested him to take up the issue at an appropriate level.
