–Media watchdog receives the most complaints regarding fake news, says PEMRA chairman

LAHORE: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Chairman Muhammad Saleem Baig has assured the students of mass communication of several opportunities in future as the media watchdog will soon issue licences to 76 new television channels.

Addressing a seminar organised by Department of Mass Communication at the Government MAO College on Thursday, the PEMRA chief said, “Future of the mass communication students is bright… PEMRA will be giving licences to 76 new channels.”

“We are trying to give more licences to entertainment channels… Right now, 235 radio stations have been given licences out of which there are 175 commercial licences,” he added.

He further said that the authority receives the highest number of complaints regarding the spread of fake news.

On this occasion, Pakistan Today Editor Arif Nizami, Mujibur Rehman Shami, Abdul Rauf, Prof Dr Mujahid Mansoori, Abid Tehami, senior journalists, media scholars and other prominent personalities participated in the seminar.
