-Sindh CM urges IGP to form a tripartite body to check movement of terrorists
-DIGs to hold meetings with administrations of educational institutes to combat drug abuse
KARACHI: The law enforcement agencies in Sindh have identified a terror outfit’s sleeper cell in Sukkur.
The development came to light during a meeting on the law and order situation in the province at the Chief Minister’s (CM) House in Karachi on Wednesday. Chief Secretary Mumtaz Shah, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kaleem Imam, Home Secretary Kazi Kabir, Karachi Additional IG Ameer Sheikh were among those who attended the meeting.
In his briefing, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) deputy inspector general (DIG) informed CM Murad Ali Shah that the force was vigilantly monitoring movements at the Sindh-Balochistan border. He said that some militant elements had established hideouts in the province. “They will be taken to task with the help of intelligence agencies,” he assured.
The police sources claim that the 2015 Jacobabad attack and the blast at an Imambargah in Shikarpur were planned in Balochistan. They said that militants operating from Balochistan penetrated Sindh to carry out the attack.
CM Murad directed officials to increase the number of checkpoints across the Sindh-Balochistan border and coordinate with Frontier Corps Constabulary (FCC) and the Balochistan IG to stop infiltration of militants.
He further directed the Sindh IGP to hold tripartite meetings of three IGPs from Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab so that close coordination could be developed in the supreme interest of law and order in the country in general and in Sindh in particular.
During the meeting, CM Murad also took notice of a target killing incident that occurred in Karachi’s PECHS society on Tuesday. AIG Sheikh said that initial investigation hinted at personal enmity as the motive.
The DIG of each region presented the progress report on street crime, extortion and kidnapping.
DIG Sukkur informed that three kidnapped people were recently recovered. “Only one businessman is still in captivity,” he added. The chief minister, annoyed, reminded the police officials that the matter had been dragging for a month and a half.
Further, matters concerning fake and fancy number plates were also discussed.
CM Murad also directed the DIGs to hold meetings with administrations of schools, colleges and universities to combat the growing trend of drug abuse in educational institutes.
In their briefing on the Chinese Consulate attack, the CTD officials said that another five suspected had been arrested.
