LAHORE: A joint investigation team (JIT) formed to probe the 2014 Model Town carnage on Monday summoned former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah in connection with the case.

The notice sent to the former law minister directs him to appear and record his statement under Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code. It has been issued by the investigation officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Iqbal Hussain Shah.

Earlier in January, the Punjab Home Department had formed a new JIT headed by Inspector General (IG) of National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) AD Khawaja.

On June 17, 2014, the Punjab police launched a crackdown to remove barriers erected outside the residence of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri. The subsequent clash between police and PAT workers resulted in the death of 14 activists of the party.

Earlier in December 2018, the Supreme Court (SC) had winded up a petition in the Model Town case after the government had assured forming a new JIT to probe the incident.

Punjab Advocate General Ahmad Awais had told a larger apex court bench headed by then-chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led Punjab government would be forming a new probe team.
