UN organises special screening of Malala’s biopic

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai’s biopic, Gul Makai, will be screened for 450 dignitaries from across the world in London on January 25, including members of the United Nations and the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM).

Gul Makai narrates the journey and struggle of Malala, from her upbringing in the Swat Valley to her becoming an advocate for free education to all women.

The film’s name is based on the pseudonym Gul Makai which Malala used while writing blogs for BBC Urdu during the Taliban rule.

Members of Pakistan, Indian and British High Commissions will be present at the screening along with Malala and her parents Ziauddin Yousafzai and Toor Pekai.

The film is directed by Amjad Khan who was quoted by Mumbai Mirror saying, “I am happy and I am very proud that my film Gul Makai is being screened in London.”

“I had to really push a lot as is usually the case. I even managed to get them to agree to my using the UN and IIMSAM logos in the film which is a privilege. This is the first time they have organised an event like this,” he added.

Another screening of the film will be hosted mid-February at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The film features Reem Shaikh as Malala along with Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh and Ajaz Khan and the late Om Puri in his final film.
