Another polio case emerges in KP

PESHAWAR: A new case of polio has surfaced in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

A sixteen-month-old girl, belonging to Marmundu Azam area of the district, has been diagnosed with the disease.

According to KP Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), this case brings the total number of 2018’s polio cases to five. As the samples were collected from the child in December 2018, the case has been added to last year’s tally.

The samples were immediately sent to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad for verification.

The NIH, in its report sent to the K-P EOC on Thursday, confirmed that the girl has contracted polio.

According to health officials involved in the anti-polio campaigns, the child was given polio drops more than seven times, however, she was not given routine vaccinations at birth.
