LAHORE: Approximately $1.22 billion have already been spent on the Orange Line Metro Train project, a report submitted in the Punjab Assembly said on Friday.

The train, which runs on electricity, is expected to transport 250,000 passengers per day with the capacity envisaged to be increased to 500,000 by 2025.

The OLMT project was launched by former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif during the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) stint in power.

According to the report, 1,065 kanals of land was obtained by the government for the construction.

Further, fourteen people lost their lives during the construction, with their families paid more than Rs2,178,000 each.

Earlier this week, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aleem Khan said that the OLMT project will be completed between June and July this year.

“We won’t close the project. As many as Rs300 billion have already been spent on the project even if I want to I can’t close it now,” he said.
