KARACHI: Former Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) member of National Assembly (MNA) Khawaja Sohail Mansoor was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday night in the Clifton area of Karachi.
The incident becomes the third one in a series of high-profile cases, including the targetted killing of former MQM-P leader Ali Raza Abidi late last year.
According to reports, armed suspects stopped Mansoor as he left a shopping centre near Bilawal House in his car.
Mansoor said that the suspects not only mugged him but issued threats against him as well. The former MNA said that “the suspects were on a bike and blocked the way as soon as he left the shopping centre”. Following this, he immediately handed over his wallet and mobile phone to them.
Earlier on Tuesday night, three unknown armed men reportedly intercepted former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair’s car in the provincial capital’s Defence area.
“I was driving home with my wife around 11:30 pm when a car intercepted us on Saba Avenue. When I saw a pistol in the hand of one of the suspects in the car, I sped off,” Zubair had told police.
“I have never asked for security and the government did not provide it either,” he had said, adding that he had been receiving threats for the past four years.
“The government should review security arrangements in light of the incidents during the last two months,” said the former governor.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South Pir Muhammad Shah, Zubair’s statement regarding the incident has been recorded but an FIR [first information report] has not yet been filed.
Later, the SSP directed police officers to be deployed outside Zubair’s residence.
Similarly, Sindh Inspector General Police (IGP) Dr Syed Kaleem Imam on Wednesday took notice of the incident.
He instructed SSP Shah to ensure security measures after meeting with Muhammad Zubair. He also directed to take every possible step to arrest of culprits involved in the incident.
