LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar said on Tuesday that the provincial government has decided to set up shelter homes for the homeless in every district of the province.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taking measures for the welfare of the underprivileged segment of society,” he said in a statement issued here.

“The provincial government will undertake a programme to establish shelter homes in every district so that people sleeping by roadsides do not suffer under the open sky in chilly weather and have a roof over their heads.”

The chief minister said the state had been fulfilling its duty by providing shelter and food to the people sleeping on roads. He said measures for the welfare of human beings were the top priority of the government and vowed to change the fate of the people by following the materialising the revolutionary approach of PM Khan.

“On the directions of the PM, the construction of shelter homes in Lahore and Rawalpindi is continuing in full swing and I am personally supervising this project,” he added.

In December, PM Khan had asked Buzdar to set up tents for people sleeping on footpaths and provide them food until permanent shelters were built.  He had said the move was necessitated by the cold weather.

Prior to this, the premier had performed in Lahore the ground-breaking ceremony of the shelter homes for the down-and-out segments of society who spend nights on the streets under the open sky.
