KARACHI: The Karachi Police on Monday launched a training course to train its investigation officers to effectively present a case before courts with substantial evidence.
The department took the decision after several alleged terrorists, target killers and other offenders were released by the courts due to the lack of evidence.
The Prosecutor General of Sindh Police will impart training to the police officials to ensure proper investigation of a case, police sources said.
The training session will be held on Saturdays and will be attended by the two officers from each unit of the Karachi Police Range, department officials said.
It is to mention that the courts have criticized the police department scores of times for their failure to provide incriminating evidence during the hearing of a case resulting in the acquittal of several accused.
Karachi’s police chief Dr Amir Shaikh, in his address to senior police officials in a meeting in September last year, said that “he had heard complaints of the investigation officers”.
Announcing steps to empower the investigations wing of the department, he said that an interrogation room would be built as per international standards in every district within three months. Besides, the senior investigating officer (SIO) – the investigations head at each police station – would be empowered and provided the necessary resources, including adequate manpower, computers, printers and photocopy machines, to effectively carry out investigations.
The city’s police chief said that the investigation wing was the backbone of the department and all SIOs would be provided with proper facilities.
