14 coal miners abducted over dispute between mine owners, jirga

Unidentified assailants abducted 14 coal miners in Darra Adama Khel on Sunday over a dispute between mine owners and the local jirga.

The coal miners worked at a mine owned by Abidur Rehman and were kidnapped from the local market area. Reportedly, the incident took place after evening prayers and two miners managed to escape the custody of the kidnappers. 10 of the 14 miners belong to the Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

An operation has been started by the security officials to free the remaining from the custody of the kidnappers. Reportedly, the mine is owned by the relatives of former parliamentarian Dr Naseem.

On January 2, a gas explosion in a coal mine in the Chamalang area of Dukki district claimed four lives and injured one.

According to Chamalang station house officer (SHO), four deceased labourers, who were burnt alive, belonged to the same family. Those died included an uncle, two brothers and one relative while the fifth miner was critically injured. The deceased and injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.

Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal had expressed grief over the unfortunate incident and directed the concerned authorities to ensure safe work environment for the mine workers to prevent further incidents.
