ISLAMABAD: The Interior Ministry has called a meeting on January 8 to discuss measures being taken to extradite Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain, who has been living in self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom since 1992.
The MQM chief is wanted in a case pertaining to the murder of another former senior party leader Imran Farooq near his home in North London on September 16, 2010.
Despite the passage of eight years, London police have not able to apprehend the murderers. Though, an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has indicted three suspects in the case. According to the statements of the accused, Dr Farooq was murdered as he was a threat to the MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
The meeting, to take place on Tuesday, will be chaired by the federal interior secretary and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director general, Sindh Inspector General Kaleem Imam and representatives from the provincial home ministry shall participate.
In October last year, the Ministry of Interior had sent a request for MQM founder’s custody to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to approach UK authorities in the matter and ask Interpol to issue red warrants for him.
