FIA initiates probe against its former director Ghani

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday initiated an inquiry against its former director Inam Ghani for his alleged involvement in sending Afghan nationals to the United Kingdom (UK) on fake documents.

The FIA team has dispatched a report to the Ministry of Interior which was prepared after the UK government complained regarding the Afghan nationals who had travelled on fake Pakistani documents. According to the report, former director Ghani, with the alleged support of other officials, had sent some Afghan nationals to the UK on Pakistani documents in 2014.

The FIA, after completing the investigation, has dispatched an electronic report to the interior ministry. CCTV footage and other electronic record are included in the report, sources said.

Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had ordered an inquiry on the complaint of the UK government. After that, Ghani was fired from his job. The FIA management had initiated an inquiry against Ghani after registering a case and recommended a departmental inquiry against him.

During the investigation, FIA officials collected telephonic record of other FIA officers and, after establishing its link with human trafficking, presented its report to the government. The FIA expanded its circle of investigation to some more officers, including FIA Deputy Director Tahir Jan, Assistant Director Rana Abid, Assistant Director Adnan Khan and others.

According to the report, these officers played the role of facilitators to send Afghan nationals abroad. The report found that the FIA officers while adopting delay tactics facilitated the crime.
