Maryam says Nawaz in ‘high spirits’ in jail

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz on Thursday said that her father, incarcerated prime minister Nawaz Sharif was in “high spirits” as she met him in jail.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Captain (r) Safdar and Hamza Shehbaz were among Nawaz Sharif’s visitors, who is serving his 7-year sentence in Kot Lakhpat District Jail.

“Just came out of Kotlakhpat jail. MNS was fine and Alhamdolillah in high spirits. Thank you, everyone, for your prayers, unflinching support & good wishes. God bless you all,” she tweeted.

“Not only do I convey the messages of his well-wishers, but also tell him that you are all standing with him like a ‘lion’. Stay blessed,” she tweeted in response to a PML-N supporter.

The entourage included former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair, Zahid Hamid, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Saira Afzal Tarar, former defence minister Khurram Dastagir, Qamarul Zaman Khan, Mian Marghoob, Rohail Asghar and others.

After the visit, Dastagir told media that Nawaz believes that the people should form a government and that if any [injustice] is done to the PML-N supremo, then people won’t hesitate in raising a voice of protest.

He asserted that the rulers should stop being arrogant.

Speaking of Nawaz’s conviction in the accountability court’s Al-Azizia verdict, ex-governor Zubair claimed that the court’s decision proves nothing as no documents have Nawaz’s signature on it.

Zubair called the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership in Sindh “politically immature” for “there’s the talk of governor rule in the province while they have put the names of 172 individuals on the Exit Control List (ECL).

He also commented on the economic scenario in the country and said that interest rate has risen to 10pc.

“The country does have a capable finance minister but it needs a stronger leadership for Asad Umar’s performance has not been satisfactory”, he reiterated.

Further, he was one to comment on the recent bailout packages from “friendly countries” and said that the country is not progressing as the government’s priority is merely to seek aid from China and Saudi Arabia.
