Sindh govt annuls public holidays in educational institutes

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Wednesday announced that schools and colleges across the province would not be availing public holidays anymore.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Steering Committee of Education Department which was presided by Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah.

Public holidays on which students would have to show up at their respective educational institutes include Kashmir Day that falls on February 5, Pakistan Day that falls on March 23, Independence Day that falls on August 14, Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai that is observed on the 14th of Islamic month Safar, Eid Milad-un-Nabi and Quaid-e-Azam Day that falls on September 11.

According to details given by the education minister’s spokesperson, students would participate in activities related to the occasion to create and raise awareness instead of taking up academic activities like usual days.

Further, the education minister directed for all educational institutes to start classes at 8:30 am and wrap up by 2 pm while teachers would be bound to stay in schools till 3 pm.

He also directed for the academic year to commence in August instead of July in addition to observing school summer vacations in May and June.
