About this ‘earthquake in Sindh’

  • What about democracy now?
Why is PTI suddenly so obsessed with taking over the government in Sindh? ‘Breaking News’ has, very quickly, moved from the ruling party asking for the PPP chief minister’s head to taking over the house down south itself, with the prime minister himself moving pieces across the chessboard. And it is so important for him that, despite the economic collapse – which he does not admit – and all other pressing matters, he’s decided to fly to Sindh and lend his own weight to this ‘earthquake’ matter.
Now, coming back to the fake accounts case, if the weight of evidence is so convincing that Murad Ali Shah will find himself behind bars sooner rather than later, then why all this drama? Indeed, the way the contents of the leaked JIT report read out, it will take quite a miracle for the PPP leadership to avoid this particular axe. But why, then, go scheming bout to change government when even throwing in the kitchen sink will leave PTI well short of numbers it needs? All Fawad Chaudhary is likely to achieve is further polarisation, with mainstream politics revolving around feuds of the high and might as the common man’s life continues to sink.
Isn’t the ruling party better advised to keep its eye on the ball and take care of the matters that affect the people the most? Sure, nobody wants corrupt people to be part of government, but if all the government’s most sincere efforts achieve, for the man on the street, is highest inflation in five years and lowest growth in nine years, aren’t there questions to be answered? Also, since the government has staked its reputation on the accountability drive in the immediate term, perhaps it should also go out of its way and ensure that the process is across the board, as justice demands. For now, it is better not to create unnecessary anxiety in Sindh; the province has its share of problems as it is. Let the law, then, take its course.
