KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday accepted a petition challenging Arif Alvi’s election as the president of Pakistan.

The petitioner, Azmat Rehan, has sought Alvi’s disqualification on the grounds that he “tampered with court documents”.

He has accused Alvi of “thrice changing his statement” during the hearing of a 1977 case pertaining to Alvia trust, claiming that the current president was a co-trustee of the trust.

Moreover, the petitioner has alleged that Alvi submitted factually incorrect documents in court that granted him ownership of 1,810 acres land near Hawkes Bay. He has added that the present SHC chief justice had also issued an order against him.

The petition then contended that a person who has changed court records cannot be elected as the president of the country.

The court has made the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the federal government and issued notices to them. The respondents have been ordered to submit their replies by Jan 1.
