The number of cases in the Supreme Court pending a decision have risen from 38,129 to 40,254 in the past year, a local media outlet reported.

According to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, frivolous litigation is a major reason behind the increase in backlog cases.

“These menaces should be seen as nothing less than poison, and should be treated as such: removing it from the body of the bar and bench is vital for survival of the justice system,” the top judge said in reference to delaying tactics and unnecessary adjournments that affect clearing the backlog.
