PL&DD distributes first 100 poultry units

LAHORE: In order to curb poverty, Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department (PL&DD), in accordance with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, has started distributing poultry units (1 cockerel and 5 hens) among low or no income individuals, whereas at least a 100 units have so far been distributed in different areas of Lahore, including Kahna, Raiwind and Model Town, Pakistan Today has learnt.

With PL&DD planning to further extend the scope of the welfare project, a ray of hope has risen among people belonging to the downtrodden sections of the society.

“I have nine children but no job. With the government taking such a step, I am hopeful that I can mature these units and start a poultry business. I have purchased two units for Rs2,400 which I borrowed from a relative,” a resident of Kahna, Muhammad Niaz, said while talking to this scribe.

A widow who lives in the Raiwind Kachi Abadi, Firdous Bibi, said, “I do not have a single penny and cannot afford the units, but my sister has purchased three and will share the eggs with me.”

The government should look into the miseries of people like me who cannot even afford Rs1,200. “Some units should be distributed free of cost or on a very low rate. I had gotten my name registered for the distribution but at this time my pocket is empty.”

PL&DD Communication Director Dr Asif Rafique, while talking to Pakistan Today said, “We are trying to meet the target set by Prime Minister Imran Khan and the department is putting its all-out efforts into the initiative. We are distributing the units as per the directions of the government and I am sure that the project will help the poor.”

Special Advisor to Chief Minister on Livestock Faisal Hayat Khan said the economy could not be improved till relief was brought to 60% of the population.

“Livestock has a 59 per cent share in the production of agriculture and such initiatives in the sector will directly benefit the people,” he added.
