KP govt opens two major flyovers of BRT

ISLAMABAD: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has opened two major flyovers of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project commonly known as the metro bus for general traffic, which provided great respite to residents after suffered traffic mess during last one year.

The major flyover of BRT project opened for traffic after completion includes Firdus Chowk and Gul Bahar U-turn in Peshawar that has eased traffic flow and address the problem of traffic congestion in the city.

Shahram Khan Tarakai, KP Minister for Local Government inaugurated the first flyover of BRT corridor at Firdus Chowk.

He said this one-kilometer long flyover was especially made as part of BRT to control traffic mess on Firdous Chowk.

“The buses on BRT project would start plying from March 2019 after completion of the project,” he maintained.

The flyover was completed within five months and thousands of vehicles would use it on daily basis to reach their destinations.

The Gulbahar U turn flyover was also inaugurated and opened for traffic.

The minister appreciated Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) for ensuring timely completion of the flyovers.

The KP government has expedited work on BRT and over 90pc construction work on its cycle and motorcycle track from Chamkani to Balahisar fort has been completed.

Similarly, work on different passenger terminals on the main BRT corridor was in full swing and would be

completed by June next year as several terminals on Chamkani-Balahisar fort (Package-I) was nearer of completion stage.

The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved Rs66 billion and Rs430.7 million for sustainable BRT Corridor that after completion would provide quality communication facilities to more than 500,000 commuters daily at an affordable rate.

Under phase-II, BRT corridor would be constructed from Malik Saad Shahed flyover near Balashir fort to Aman Chowk via Khyber Road with a financial assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Green belts and drainage system on both sides of the BRT corridor are being restored while beautification of main and service roads and bridges were accelerated. Work on interchange bridges at Chamkani were in the final stage of completion.

BRT is a flagship project of PTI Government that will add to the beauty of Peshawar besides providing quality transport facilities to over five lakh passengers on daily basis.
