Environmental scientists on Tuesday painted a grim picture about the impact of Hurricane Katrina, fearing chemical pollution from devastated sites could contaminate groundwater, fisheries and seafood. LAHORE: The Punjab government on Saturday was directed by the Supreme Court (SC) to submit a complete plan regarding water treatment plants on December 5.

A two-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar resumed hearing over the matter at the Lahore Registry of the top court.

Punjab Minister for Housing Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed informed the bench that the government has formed a committee to install water treatment plants and a meeting in this regard had been summoned on Tuesday.

“You only have six-month experience in administrative matters, we have been sitting here for the past 21 years. The purpose of creating committees is to cause delays. Mr Minister inform us when implementation will be done,” CJP Nisar observed.

“The whole of Lahore is drinking unclean water and River Ravi is being polluted,” he further remarked.

“We haven’t been in office for long,” Rasheed responded.

“Whether you have been in office for 10 days or 20, we want implementation,” the CJP remarked. “We are working day and night to implement court orders,” the PTI leader answered.

The top judge then directed Rasheed to submit a complete plan for installing water treatment plants on December 5.

“If need be, we will summon the provincial chief minister. Bring the plan and come to Islamabad on Wednesday, we will hear the case over there,” the top judge remarked.
