–Govt says CCI has approved policy for controlling population
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) was on Thursday informed that all the four provinces have constituted a task force to control the country’s increasing population.
While hearing a suo motu case, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar took notice of the unchecked population growth and ordered a full-fledged countrywide campaign to raise awareness about the issue, following his trip from the United Kingdom.
As the hearing went underway, Additional Attorney General Nayyar Abbas Rizvi told the court that the Council of Common Interests (CCI) has approved a policy to control the country’s population growth.
“All the provinces have constituted task forces to take measures for curbing the population, as instructed by the CCI,” he informed.
The additional attorney general further said, “A grand symposium would be organised in Islamabad on Dec 5 in this regard.”
Following this, the CJP summoned the symposium’s recommendations to curb the population growth and adjourned the hearing till Dec 13.
Earlier, the council decided to constitute national and provincial task forces to monitor the impacts of rapid population growth that currently stands at 207.8 million with a growth rate of 2.4% per annum.
The task forces were instructed to submit a comprehensive action plan to the CCI, detailing the awareness campaign and ways to garner support from all segments of the society for a successful population control programme.
The CCI unanimously emphasised the need for greater focus towards renewable energy in existing energy mix.
