LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday declared it mandatory for pillion riders to wear helmets from December 1.

The directives were issued by a bench of the LHC while hearing a case pertaining to the use of helmets. The bench also ordered the city traffic officer (CTO) to ensure its implementation.

A strict action against the violators was directed as well.

Informing the court about the performance of the traffic police, the CTO said that more than 200,000 tickets had so far been issued to helmet rule violators.

He also told the court that a crackdown has been initiated against those who ride their motorbikes without side mirrors.

Earlier, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led Punjab government had declared it mandatory for motorcyclists to wear helmets.

In September, the LHC had also directed traffic police to launch a crackdown against motorists without helmets.
